Want a chance to show off your photography skills? Norfolk Archaeological Trust (NAT) is hosting an exciting photography competition to celebrate Norfolk’s rich archaeological heritage, from prehistoric landscapes to Roman ruins.

Celebrating the Spirit of Norfolk’s Heritage

Home to luscious green landscapes, winding rivers, and remote ruins, Norfolk boasts a unique beauty steeped in history. And what better way to celebrate the spirit of Norfolk’s heritage than to capture it?

We’re inviting photographers of all ages and abilities to capture Norfolk’s fascinating past for the chance to see their work celebrated and credited at NAT exhibitions and events. Plus, there is an exciting array of prizes up for grabs, including a delicious dining experience, a luxury chocolate hamper, and free parking privileges*.

To participate, all photos must be taken at one of our historical sites. These include:

Competition Categories & Requirements

Age Categories

You don’t have to be a seasoned photographer to join in – anyone at any age can enter!

  • Adult (18+)
  • Youth (Under 18)

Image Categories

To participate, all photos must fit within one or more of the following image categories:

  • Landscape & Architecture
  • Wildlife at NAT
  • People at NAT

Image Requirements

All submissions should meet the following requirements:

  • JPEG format (.jpg/ .jpeg)
  • File size up to 10mb
  • No watermarks
  • Basic editing allowed
  • No AI images

How to Enter

To enter our competition, simply follow these steps:

  1. Take photos at a Norfolk Archaeological Trust heritage site.
  2. Submit up to 5 images via form or email:
    • Option A (Google account required): Fill out the NAT Photography Competition Form
    • Option B: Email your images to natphotocomp26@gmail.com, including your name, age category, image category, and site location

Competition opens on 30th April 2026 and closes on 4th September 2026.

Prizes*

Overall Winner (Adults): Enjoy a meal for two with wine at The Queen’s Head near Burgh Castle, plus a year of free parking at Burgh Castle and Caistor Roman Town.

Overall Winner (Under 18s): Win a £50 Waitrose chocolate hamper, plus a year of free parking at Burgh Castle and Caistor Roman Town.

Image Category Winners: One winner will be chosen per image category (Landscape & Architecture, Wildlife at NAT, and People at NAT) and receive a year of free parking at Burgh Castle and Caistor Roman Town.

Winning and shortlisted images will also be showcased and celebrated, with full credit to the photographer, at NAT exhibitions, events, and fundraisers.

 

Photography Competition – Terms & Conditions

Please read our full competition terms & conditions before entering:
  1. Organiser
  • The competition is organised by the Norfolk Archaeology Trust (NAT).
  • By entering, participants agree to be bound by these rules.
  1. Eligibility
  • The competition is open to UK residents.
  • Entrants must be 18 years or over for the Adult category.
  • Entrants under 18 may enter the Youth category with permission from a parent or legal guardian.
  • Employees, trustees, and immediate family members of Norfolk Archaeology Trust may enter but are not eligible to win prizes (unless otherwise stated).
  1. Competition Categories

Photographs should relate to archaeology, historic landscapes and the wildlife at NAT sites, including:

  • Landscape & Architecture
  • Wildlife at NAT
  • People at NAT

Photographs fitting one or more of these categories must be taken at one of the following NAT sites:

  • Binham Priory
  • Bloodgate Hill Fort
  • Burgh Castle
  • Caistor Roman Town
  • Fiddler’s Hill Barrow
  • Middleton Mount
  • Moot Hill
  • Benet’s Abbey
  • Tasburgh Earthworks
  1. Entry Limits
  • Each entrant may submit up to 5 photographs.
  • Images may be in colour or black and white.
  • Entries must be submitted via the official competition entry method by 4th September 2026.
  1. Image Requirements
  • Images must be the original work of the entrant.
  • Basic editing is permitted (e.g. cropping, exposure, colour correction).
  • Heavy manipulation, compositing, or AI-generated images are not permitted.
  • Files must meet the following technical specifications:
    • JPEG format (.jpg/.jpeg)
    • 2–10MB
    • No watermarks
  1. Copyright & Image Use
  • Copyright remains with the photographer.
  • By entering, entrants grant the Norfolk Archaeology Trust and sponsor a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to use submitted images for:
    • Exhibition and display
    • Website and social media
    • Educational and promotional materials
    • Future non-commercial marketing relating to the competition or NAT’s work
  • All images will be credited to the photographer wherever used.
  • Images will not be sold or used commercially without further permission.
  1. Judging
  • Entries will be judged by a panel appointed by the Norfolk Archaeology Trust.
  • Judging criteria include:
    • Relevance to theme
    • Creativity and originality
    • Technical quality
    • Sensitivity and respect for heritage
  • Judges’ decisions are final, and no correspondence will be entered into.
  1. Winners & Prizes
  • Winners will be announced and contacted within 10 working days after the competition closing date.
  • No cash alternative is available unless stated.
  • Prizes are non-transferable.
  • Where applicable, prizes must be redeemed within the stated validity period.
  • Free parking will be valid for one year from the date of issue.
  • Any vouchers or experiences will be issued directly to winners with full redemption details.
  1. Exhibition & Publicity
  • Shortlisted and winning entries may be displayed in a public exhibition (physical and/or online).
  • Entrants agree that their name and image may be used in connection with the competition, including publicity and media coverage.
  1. Responsible Access & Ethics
  • Entrants must not trespass, disturb archaeology, or access restricted or protected sites.
  • No images should show damage to archaeological sites or unsafe behaviour.
  • Photography of scheduled monuments or sensitive locations must comply with all legal and access restrictions.
  • Drone photography will not be accepted as per NAT’s drone policy.
  • Entries that encourage irresponsible behaviour or site damage will be disqualified.
  • Entries will be disqualified if they contain offensive or inappropriate content, or if they infringe on copyright or any third-party rights.
  1. Data Protection
  • Personal data will be used solely for administering the competition and related communications.
  • Data will be handled in accordance with UK data protection legislation and NAT’s privacy policy.
  1. Changes & Cancellation

The Norfolk Archaeology Trust reserves the right to amend these rules or cancel the competition if circumstances require. Any changes will be communicated via official channels.

Submission of an entry constitutes acceptance of these rules.
