Celebrating Heritage Open Days 2025 at Caistor St Edmund.

This years theme for HODs 2025 is architecture, and our Tour Guide Franz has created a tour specially for this opportunity.  On 12, 13 and 14 September, Franz will lead a tour and talk at the site.  The Roman Invasion of Britain brought about much change those two thousand years ago, not least in building techniques.  In Britain the tribes continued to live in one room huts created using wooden posts, joined together with wattle and dab panels and given a thatched roof.  This style of single story dwelling was used through the Bronze Age and the Iron Age and into sub Roman Britain.  Imagine how it would have seemed when the Romans arrived with their cement, creating walls, homes, state buildings and even 2 story buildings; to the natives this would have been awe inspiring.

Franz will share with you the techniques and materials used by the Romans which changed the landscape of Britain forever.
