Visitors will have a unique opportunity this September to explore Moot Hill, Wymondham, as the historic site opens to the public for the first time as part of Heritage Open Days.
The event will give visitors the chance to learn about the work undertaken to understand and protect it, and hear about exciting plans to conserve and share this remarkable place for future generations.
Moot Hill is one of Norfolk’s most intriguing archaeological sites. Believed to be a Norman ringwork linked to the powerful D’Albini family, it may also contain evidence of an Iron Age settlement dating back more than 2,000 years. The site is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and is currently listed on Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register.
Acquired by Norfolk Archaeological Trust earlier this year, Moot Hill is the first site the Trust has purchased for several decades. Since acquiring the site, the Trust has begun surveys, safety works and conservation planning aimed at securing its long-term future while balancing the needs of archaeology, wildlife and public access.
During the event, visitors will hear directly from members of the project team about the site’s significance, and the challenges and opportunities involved in protecting this important piece of Norfolk’s heritage. They will also learn how community involvement is helping to shape the future of the site.
