On Friday 15th August we took our gazebo and our craft supplies and activities along to Burgh Castle to have some summer holiday fun.  School aged children were invited to make a Vexillum, the Roman equivalent of our Standards used in the Army.    The only known Vexillum from the 3rd Century is in the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts in Russian but it is believed that all Vexillum were red background, with a coat of arms representing the Legion.

There was the opportunity to make a roman soldier model using a cardboard tube, colouring and dot to dot sheets and a Roman Soldier from a paper plate. Everyone had the opportunity to be busy.  There was also a trail to follow to discover facts about the life of a Roman Soldier. Did you know that soldiers in the Roman Army signed up for 25 years, and on retirement were given a piece of land to facilitate them making a living after life in the army.  How many battles did you have to survive to earn your piece of land!

The weather was hot hot hot, and we were glad of the shade of our trusty Gazebo, Thank you to everyone who joined us for this summer event, we look forward to seeing you next year.
