Support us

We rely on grants and visitor donations to fund maintenance for our current sites and to take on new monuments at risk. We need your help to continue our work.

Why support us?

Our sites need lots of care and attention – we make sure the buildings are looked after and repaired when needed; we maintain the natural environment our sites sit in; and we also need to keep our fences, pathways, notice boards, carparks and other infrastructure in a good state of repair.

You can help us continue to save Norfolk’s historic monuments:

  • Make a donation
  • Become a member
  • Volunteer with us

Volunteer

Our volunteers play an important part in the success of Norfolk Archaeological Trust. They help us with a huge range of activities including conservation, school visits, guided tours, research, social media and events. Volunteering is a great way to learn new skills, meet new people and discover more about the archaeology on your doorstep, whilst supporting a local charity. All of our volunteer team receive a full induction, training and support in their roles, as well as recognition for their commitment and regular social events.

“I love meeting the visitors, having a chat about the history and the wildlife, and enjoying the fresh air.” – Chris, Site Steward.

Everyone is welcome to apply for any of our volunteer roles. All of our current opportunities are available on this page. We look forward to hearing from you!

Ralph, Volunteer School Guide, Burgh Castle

“I volunteer to help under staffed schools with local history on site; with other volunteers I take groups around Burgh Castle Fort. Always when we get a really good class it makes life very worthwhile. What do I enjoy about volunteering? Being able late in life to still help make things tick.”

Marion, Volunteer Tour Guide, St Benet’s Abbey

“What do I enjoy about volunteering? Meeting and interacting with all the visitors, who are so interested and enthusiastic about St Benet’s Abbey.”

Emily, Volunteer, UEA Placement Student

“As part of my current studies at UEA I have been lucky enough to spend 15 weeks with the Norfolk Archaeological Trust where I’ve been involved in different aspects of the trust. I’ve learnt new skills and honed existing ones. I think it is safe to say that no two days have been the same.”

We want to make sure that volunteers get the most out of their time with NAT and have created a handbook for new volunteers. This book gives you an overview of NAT and an outline of all the things you need to know to volunteer with us. It complements a more specific role induction you will receive with your volunteer manager when you start.

Safeguarding Policy

Health & Safety Policy

The Trust is committed to providing healthy and safe conditions for our volunteers when carrying out their tasks. We do this by carrying out risk assessments and providing volunteers with the information, training and equipment they need to remain safe whilst carrying out their role.

To help us ensure our sites are safe, volunteers are reminded that they have a duty of care for themselves and also others who may be affected by their actions on sites. As part of this, we provide volunteers with emergency procedures for each site which can be found below, as well as an incident reporting form to report any accident, incident or near miss.
