St Benet’s Abbey has probably some of the most Iconic Architecture of any Heritage Monument anywhere, so this Icon of The Broads just had to be featured in our Heritage Open Day Events for 2025’s theme of Architecture.
We have partnered with other organisations to bring this site to life and starting at 10:30 in the morning you can join one of our tour guides together with a natural history expert and walk from Ludham Bridge to St Benet’s Abbey with stories of links to the River and an expert to share the flora and forna with you before arriving at St Benet’s Abbey for a tour of the site. This tour is only available to ticket holders (Book Quickly) and tickets are available from the Heritage Open Day Team: Beyond the Ruins: The Architecture of St Benet’s Abbey
Don’t worry if you don’t get tickets you can still join the fun at St Benet’s Abbey where our Event Team will offer activity for school aged children including making a model monk from cardboard tubes and using coloured cellophane to make a stained glass window to take home. Our tour guides will be on site to chat about the stories of this site and share their expert knowledge. Did you know the Ludham Dragon visited St Benet’s Abbey in a rage. There will be a trail for all ages to find the dragon and if you are a Geocacher this site has a wonderful trail for you to enjoy too.
Once you have enjoyed St Benet’s Abbey, you can travel onto St Catherine’s Church in Ludham which will be open for you to hear of it’s history from their guides and meet The Ludham Dragon. The church is also offering refreshments for you to buy so you can enjoy a cuppa and a piece of cake.
